First Week Complete!

Maddie Torretta
It seems like just yesterday I was moving in as a freshman so nervous to start my first preseason and my new life in college.  However, now I am a senior going through all of this for the fourth time and getting ready for my final season on the field as a Lady Hawk.  As we finish up our first week of preseason I can say that I cannot wait for games to start and for this team to try to accomplish things no Quincy team has every done.

Preseason is never easy, especially with fitness testing and two a days, but the whole team came in super fit and ready to play.  We pushed our way through all NINE cones, the dreaded two mile, and our 18-30’s just within the first 3 days.

Needless to say ice baths every night became a must, but we all made it through and got an even bigger surprise come Sunday. Our field was ready!!!   We have been working on our technical skills and finishing, our fitness and one v ones, and our tactics.  Everything is just so much easier on this new field that never has a bad hop.  Our passes are crisp and right where we intend them to go and our shots hitting the back of the net like we anticipate they should.  With this new field we believe as a team we can accomplish so much more than we ever have before.

Not only have we been training hard on the field, but getting to know each other off the field as well.  We have 6 awesome new freshmen that are so excited to start their college careers and as seniors we are trying to show them the way the Lady Hawks do things around here.  We all know that the only way to win anything in this league is to be close as a team and work together both on and off the field.

I am so excited for this season and as seniors we believe our team has a chance to go all the way this year.  We set our goals high for ourselves knowing that if we play to our potential everything is possible.  This year we not only hope to make it back to the GLVC championship game but to bring home another trophy (or two).

Tomorrow night for the first time we will get to show everyone how great this team can be on this field with our first preseason game against Hannibal.  HERE WE GO!!!!!

"Enjoy Da Moment"

Lori Mannion
Wow! I cannot believe that I only have a few short weeks of summer left until move in day!  This is such a surreal feeling.  As I stop and think about my last three years spent at Quincy University, all the memories made and people I’ve met, I cannot help but feel a sense of pure happiness.  I remember four and a half years ago I went on a road trip with Jaclyn and Jodi for my first visit to QU my junior year of high school.  I knew from this first visit that Quincy was the place for me.  My other college visits did not even matter after that.  Since making my decision and attending QU I have met some of the greatest (and hilarious) people on the entire planet I think, and I am proud to call them my teammates.

Earlier in the summer I was hanging out with “Lady Hawk #4” alum Aimee Ubriaco and we were rehashing old memories and talking about my upcoming season as a senior.  She said something that has stuck with me throughout the whole summer.  She said to me, “Lori, this is the last time you will EVER play soccer again at this level”.  At this level.  I had never really thought about it this way but she could not have been more spot on.  I have been kicking a ball since I was 3 years old and it all comes down to one more year.  I am determined to make it my best one yet!

As a team we are expecting a lot from each other since we have a bigger target on our backs than we have ever had before.  It’s exhilarating!  We are a team full of competitors and are ready to accept the challenge with open arms.  Also, since I passed my special nursing exam that allows me to graduate on time, I get to end my four years with the people I came in with.  Such a special group.  I love this group of girls and they will forever be my sisters.  So, to my fellow seniors, here’s to one more year of greatness, making memories and having laughs along the way.  I’m going to “Enjoy Da Moment” each and every day with all of you.

The Journey Back

Sam Martinez
If someone would have told me exactly a year ago that I would have two ACL tears, I would have never believed them.  As awful as it sounds I still feel blessed that I’m coming back and being a part of this team.  It only seems right to end my final season with this senior class, considering I started my soccer career with this group of girls.  From the beginning I’ve played with Molly and Teeny on good old JB Marine and have played against Jaclyn, Lori, and Jodi, gosh knows how many times.  Then for high school, Maddie went to Lafayette’s biggest rival school, Marquette.  I guess you can say everything happens for a reason and I truly think the reason for me missing last season was for me to end my soccer career with these girls because it’s just that much more meaningful.

I’m still trying to figure out the reason though for getting hurt again in spring.  All I know right now is that I’m doing everything I can to get back to playing at a high level again.  I’m rehabbing everyday now and finally getting touches on the ball.  I’m trying to do every small thing I can to build up muscle.  I even walk around the house on my tippy toes to strengthen my calves and I do squats while I shower.  It’s silly, I know, but every small thing I can do will help.

I would just like to say too, that I wouldn’t be this motivated to get back if it wasn’t for everyone’s support.  It literally broke my heart when I tore it the second time, but my teammates, coaches, alumni, family and friends lifted me up.  So many people reached out to me and it meant the world to me.  I’m not sure on how much of the season I will be able to play.  I just know that this long road I’ve been on will all be worth it if I could just play one game, under the lights, on our home field and hear that song, “It’s a Beautiful Day”.

The Next Chapter - Coach Coz!

Molly Costello
I'm actually a senior... WHAT. THE. HECK?1? This cannot be right for a number of senioritis reasons. First off, I still can't read my schedule. I'm not quite sure when the cafe closes for lunch. I get confused when people say they have class in Friars, or are going to the computer lab there. I'm not always sure when the Health and Fitness Center closes (and I work there!) and God forbid I remember my mail box combination that has been the same since freshman year.  It seems like only yesterday I was a little freshman, anxious to be in college thinking the campus was ginormous, actually liking the cafe (what in the world was I thinking!?) and having my big sis show me the ropes of what it is like to be a Quincy University Lady Hawk Soccer Player.

This summer and upcoming season are totally different than any other season I've ever had.  After three long(gggggg) and frustrating years, I have finally decided to hang up my boots.  I broke my leg playing soccer my Senior Year of high school, and had tried making my big comeback ever since, coming to the realization that my time had ended.  As depressing as the past three years have been, I have now decided to make a comeback in my own way, in a new role. This year I will be a student coach.  Last fall and this past spring I tested the waters a little with this new role and I am more excited than ever to start this new experience. I'm definitely ready to bring out my clip board, hat, whistle, watch, have my very own practice plan and run these girls till they drop! (Only kidding, smoochies ;)

In all seriousness, I'm beyond honored to have this opportunity. Soccer has always been a huge part of my life even though I may not be able to play anymore, I'm still apart of this hilariously awesome team. This team has gotten me through my toughest times; from all the surgeries, to the long hours of physical therapy, and all
the tears, the team always sent positive vibes my way. These girls kept me from going insane and are truly my best friends. As bad as it is having a career ending injury, this program has opened up other doors for me. My dad was a coach and now I see why he loved it so much! Who knows... maybe it just runs in the blood and I'm destined to be a coach someday and I never would have known that without this opportunity. I cannot say thank you enough to everyone who has been there for me...from siblings, friends, teammates, physical therapists, trainers, and doctors, but an extra thank you to my parents and coaches... you guys all made this injury bearable by supporting me with every decision I have made.

I am unbelievably excited to work with this 2013-2014 Team in my new role. Preseason will be here before we know it and Coach Coz will be in full force! With that being said... I hope Dave and Katie know what they got themselves into!!!!

Catchin' up with Jack!

Jaclyn Mastroianni
Summer is in full swing and my senior season is approaching quickly.  3 years have come and gone.  I remember being an incoming freshman and looking at our schedule and not knowing what to expect and now I am a veteran.  I have been busy this summer with work, an online class and soccer practice and workouts.  We are already into our second phase of our H.A.W.K workout plan.  The Lady Hawks have been getting in shape with these workouts, individual workout plans, and summer league games on Thursday nights.  With these workout plans we work on our endurance, strength, quickness, speed, and ball skills.  Our team is getting stronger and we’re ready to win.  I can tell the girls are anxious for the upcoming season at our Thursday night games, even the incoming freshman have stepped into playing the Lady Hawk way.   Everyone is playing hard, communicating well on the field, and having fun.  We’ve only had two games so far, but I can tell this season is going to be special.

Everyone has stepped it up this summer to get in shape because of the target we have on our backs, especially after the great season we had last year.  I feel this season is going to be the hardest, but most exciting season out of all my years.  It is going to be the hardest because of the great competition in the GLVC.  Every team is strong and for all my years here everyone plays extra hard when they play Quincy.  It is going to be a battle every game, but it will be one of the most exciting seasons for us and for Lady Hawks history.

This team is so strong and I know everyone wants to win as much as I do.  All the sprints, timed 2 miles, sweat, and hot summer days will feel great when we hear “It’s a Beautiful Day” playing throughout the stadium.  I still can’t believe that senior year is almost here, but I am so excited for this team and I can’t wait to see what the year brings.  LETS GOOOOOOOO

Senior Year is Here!

Jodi Chapie
Wheeeew wee! It seems like just yesterday I was a little freshman coming in under Tori Champagne's wing. This crazy journey of life called college has flown by. Now approaching my senior year and my last year of soccer, I plan on training harder than ever. No regrets this season. IT’S TIME TO MAKE (even more) HISTORY LADIES! This year I would love to see our team advance in the NCAA tournament and try to go all the way. We definitely have the potential.

Last season we had many great accomplishments. Winning the GLVC was amazing. That will always be something I remember for the rest of my life. My sophomore we were so close and we let it slip right through our fingers. That wasn’t a good feeling and I know the returners weren’t trying to go home empty handed again. I’m glad we took care of business and got some beautiful rings for it too!
Every season I always try to think of the most memorable game. Usually the first game that pops into mind was the last one that knocked us out of the NCAA tournament. I always think what I could’ve done differently, etc. BUT the most memorable game for me this season was definitely on my birthday! We were playing against Drury on our home field and we just couldn’t score. As a goalie, the whole game just dragged on for me because our defense was shutting them down and they couldn’t get a shot off. Even through over time, still not one shot against us! Nothing is more nerve-racking than going the whole game not getting a shot against you and thinking well what if they get one shot… and it goes in… you were basically useless! Well regulation time was over and it was time to go into PK’s. Growing up I’ve always loved penalty kicks. It’s an adrenaline rush knowing that you have an even huger role in helping your team advance or win. The pressure was on and we answered! My team stormed in and Jaclyn tackled me to the ground. Everyone piled on and it was crazy! I was crying so hard I couldn’t breathe! I’ll never forget that feeling or that game!

This summer is zooming by. Tonight was the first game of our summer league out at SportPort and I saw many great things. Not all of the incoming freshmen were there because of high school soccer still going on and some live far away, but it was a great showing! Breezie Breeze got her first shut out! While, Little Kuhls and Katie shut it down in the midfield and defense! I’m stoked for what this season has in store for us. I hope to end my soccer career with nothing but great memories from the girls who are dang near my sisters. But nothing worthwhile ever comes easy! The training never stops and so I’ll leave you with this quote from Babe Ruth, “It’s hard to beat a person who never gives up.”

Taking That Next Step

Hello Lady Hawk fans this is Kayla Nurnberger sophomore at QU. I’d like to share with you some of the stuff we have been doing in our off season.

Coming off 2012 season high, we are working very hard for 2013 season.  We are super excited about our spring schedule!  We are scheduled to play at Illinois-Springfield March 23rd, Southwest Baptist March 30th in St. Louis, SLU and Iowa State April 14th at SLU, and Maryville and UMSL at Lindenwood April 20th.  We have some great competition this spring. In the off season we have been working hard.  These have been some of the workouts we’ve been doing… Cross fits, futsal games, ball skills, and different running activities like (sprints, stairs, agility, lifting, timed mile, jump rope, and ladder).  We also have pool workouts every Thursday at 7am. They are a good, tiring workout only bad part is waking up for it.  These mornings will pay off in the long run though.  We just had our team banquet and Dave and Katie totally surprised us with our GLVC rings! It was cool; Dave had told us all to stand in a line (numerical order).  He said, “We are doing something new this year.”  We didn’t think anything of it.  Then walks in Katie with yellow bags which ended up being our GLVC rings!  We all were definitely surprised!
