"We Finally Did It!"

So. Taylor Wakeland
Let me tell you, it wasn’t easy, but we finally did it! We won the GLVC championship and made history for our program here at Quincy University. Along with the celebration of wearing our green t-shirts for the whole week after (yes, without washing them) came a lot of hard work and dedication from every member of our team. It all began last year on November 6, 2011. On this horrible day which I think most of us would like to forget, we lost to Bellarmine in the GLVC final in pks. We came so close and so far (literally 9 hours away to Northern Kentucky) and lost it all in a matter of PENATLY KICKS, the one thing that I deem unfair in soccer. However, I think one good thing came from this loss: the drive we needed to win this year’s championship. I think I can speak for the team when I say we all have never wanted anything more than a GLVC championship (and a ring of course). We had our ups and downs this season, but we pulled together as a team and kept working hard to achieve our goals. Even all off season we worked together as a team for one goal: To win; And our dreams finally came true. WE’RE GETTING RINGS!!!

I don’t think I have ever witnessed so much emotion from a team or group of people in my entire life. As the buzzer sounded to end the game, we all ran out onto the field with tears of joy. Nothing else in the world mattered at that very moment. All that mattered was that we had just beaten William Jewel 1-0 in regulation. It was definitely bitter sweet after losing to them earlier in the season 2 to 1. I have to say a win has never felt so rewarding. Everyone put aside everything else in their life and we came together to win as one. Whether it was people playing new positions or injured players cheering on the sideline, everyone had a role in our historic win. For example, I had to change positions this year from wing mid to ATTACKING wing back. At first I was a little worried about playing defense since I hadn’t played back there in years. However, as the season went on I grew to love this position. At times, I felt a little lost out there but I knew I had the support of my teammates the whole way. My favorite part of this position is that it wasn’t all about defense. If you notice the caps in attacking, I got to go up and aid in the attack a lot more than I expected. Overall, I think I adjusted well with the support of my teammates and coaches.

"It's all about The U!"
Furthermore, I think one aspect that aided in our win and made it that much more exciting was that we were able to host. Being able to host is a huge advantage especially when you have awesome fans like THE UNION (aka the U) that are there to support you every step of the way, rain or shine, win or loss. It's fans like them that make soccer so much fun and exciting especially here at QU. Not only that, but having our family and friends there on our home field cheering, made winning feel that much better. The memories of winning that championship with this special team will be forever embedded in my mind. I still to this day get chills just thinking about it.

Right now, our lives are kind of hectic even though the season ended. This week is finals week and we’re all studying hard to make sure we get that GPA award again! Even though the season ended we all are still doing things on our own to stay in shape, having “Fit for Life” attitudes. However, as soon as we come back we will hit the work outs hard and strive to win another championship once again, hopefully on our home turf! “It’s a great day to be a hawk!”

2012 Lady Hawk Skit Night!

The Lady Hawks did a fun and new event this year during preseason...Skit Night!

We split our team into three different groups and they had a couple of chances at the beginning of preaseason camp to get together and come up with some ideas to put on a skit and compete for the first ever Lady Hawk Skit Night Championship! We brought on three random (and awesome) judges who ended up having to flip a coin at the end because of a tie-breaker!

Check it out and great job ladies!

Regular Season is Here!

It's finally here! Our first regular season game is tomorrow! I hope everyone is as excited as the team and I are. All the fitness tests and two-a-days are finally going to pay off. I couldn't be any more excited coming into my senior season. Preseason went very well and everyone was super fit. Our preseason games went well too, we dominated. (:

I'm extremely excited for the team this year more than any other year before. I've been playing with some of these girls for three years (and I've known one my whole life lol) and this group of girls is really a great group and so much fun to play with. Our chemistry on the team is unlike any other team I've ever been on and you can see it when we are out on the field, even the freshmen have jumped right in like they've been part of the team all along.

Opening weekend starts tomorrow against nationally ranked Lynn in St. Louis at 1pm and our team couldn't be more excited. There have already been injuries, so tomorrow will be a test for our team, but I think that we can do it. I have full confidence in this team to do great things. On Sunday we play Missouri Southern in Quincy at 12 pm and I hope everyone is able to make it out to North campus to see our home opener, we appreciate and love all the support and energy we receive from our fans during games.

So please come out and support us this weekend, against Lynn tomorrow (Friday) at 1pm in St. Louis and then again on Sunday against Missouri Southern at 12 pm in Quincy, and you'll see just how amazing this group of girls is (:

Walker Update - 3 Days Complete!

I can’t believe we already have three two-a-days of my senior year under our belts. All our fitness tests are done (Thank God!) and everyone has been working really hard at these practices. It is evident that everyone has been working hard this summer. We have worked on our ball skills, transition, finishing, one v ones, and fitness. These drills are all very important for the success of our season, but there is one thing we cannot really work on at practice and it the most essential thing for our team….TEAM CHEMISTRY.

Even though we all miss our hilarious seniors from last year and all their funny tricks they played on the players and coaches, it is exciting to have the new freshmen on our team. They will all bring something unique to our team whether it is on the field or outside of soccer. Every night our team has done different activities to build our team chemistry and grow as a team. Team chemistry can be the difference between a good season and an outstanding season. With these activities, we are able to learn the personalities of each player and hopefully, we will be able to play very well together on the field. Without team chemistry, our team would not have been as successful as they have for the past six years.

For my senior year, I would love to host and win the GLVC conference. I know this will be hard season but winning the tournament is very achievable. This team can accomplish great things if we continue to work hard at practice and continue to develop our team chemistry.

BIRDS FLYIN’ HIGH 2012

Well the summer is winding down and the Lady Hawks are getting ready to head back to Quincy! This is the most exciting part of summer and the hottest! It feels like just yesterday Sam Andert and I were moving in together and anxiously waiting for preseason to begin. Everyone is ready to slowly get through move in day and relax before two-a-days begin and the 2012 Season will be underway!! We have been able to play a few games as a new team and the chemistry is great! Everyone has been working really hard to prepare for this year and we all have big plans and expectations for this season! The K phase is in high gear and I know we have been working hard all summer to get fit and ready for a tough GLVC conference!

It is crazy to think that this will be my (first ever) senior season! Senior Year of high school I broke my ankle at the beginning of the season and could not play the rest of the year. I cannot wait for my last year as a Quincy Lady Hawk and I look forward to the long road ahead! I am so lucky to be part of this unbelievable program with amazing girls and teammates! We are in the home stretch and these last few weeks will fly by. The team is bonding both on and off the field and I think we all are excited to start our new journey! As a returner I know how difficult our conference and season are and I know the other returners are excited to gain some great new players to help us make it all the way!! BIRDS FLYIN’ HIGH 2012

Martinez Update: 2012 Summer Workout Playlist!

After playing soccer now for 13 years, it’s crazy to think that this is going to be my last season. Yes, it’s sad to think about, but I’m really excited. I’ve had so many great memories over these past three years with a bunch of great girls. So to help get pumped and fit for this upcoming season I created a workout playlist that actually gets me to leave the SVU marathon and get off my couch. Each song brings back a good laugh or an inside joke with the girls.

Party in the U.S.A. - Miley Cyrus - The senior girls will remember this back from freshman year, “I’m a beautiful butterfly!”..haha..

Shark in the Water - VV Brown - Running around pretending to be sharks….

Love Done Gone - Billy Currington - Standing on a chairs and shouting this at the top of our lungs

Pop Bottles - Birdman - Good song after a winning weekend…

Donk - Soulja Boy - Believe it or not, but me and BC made a dance routine to this song…pppllluusss this was Brittany’s favorite song freshman year ;)

Thunderstruck - AC/DC - Good team memories with this one ;)

Club Can’t Handle Me - Flo Rida - Dancing on the bus with the team! Whoop whoop!

Birds Flying High - Lil Wayne - Pretending to be birds and flapping our hands like wings…

Knockout - Lil Wayne & Nicki Minaj - It’s the I love BLAnK people song!! haha

Down - Jay Sean - Sam Andert’s jam

The Wop - J Dash - Dancing to this song is a workout!

Someone Like You - Adele - I have put so many dollar bills in jukeboxes to play this song…

Beautiful Day - U2 - BEST. SONG. EVER.

I’m looking forward to this upcoming season and the new memories. This team really does have the best group of girls, coaches and fans. I feel so blessed to be ending my soccer career with the Quincy Lady Hawks.

Summer Update, Battling the Heat!

It’s really hot outside.  Like really hot.  But I hate to disappoint Mother Nature – the Lady Hawks have big dreams for 2012 and that’s not stopping us!

Each girl has been out there working hard and making herself better.  It’s almost July, and our training is really taking off. Our times get faster, our skills get sharper, and the excitement for the 2012 season keeps growing.  I’m confident that each player is on her way to her personal best.

In addition to everyone training on her own, most of our players meet weekly for the summer league in St. Louis.  It’s been an absolute blast to see all of the girls work together out on the field.  We’ve got experienced returners, exciting new freshmen, and refreshing comebacks from injuries this year.  Even though the league is pretty relaxed, the touches we are getting and the chemistry we are forming is awesome!  I personally think it has something to do with the coaching (by yours truly).

Training on our own in the summer is an absolute grind.  No one particularly likes the early-morning runs or the mid-day heat.  But it brings us all one step closer to a successful 2012 season and that’s what matters most.  Keep working hard, ladies; and remember, our favorite teams up north would pass out if they were in this heat!

End of Spring Update with Teeny Vogt!

I think the spring season was awesome for our team. We had a rough start, but I think that lost to Truman was essential for our team. It definitely showed us our weaknesses, but when that weekend was over and we went back to practice, it was like everyone knew what they had to do.

We went to St. Louis the next weekend and came back with two wins against SLU and Wash U, battling the weather conditions and rain delays. That was a big accomplishment for us because it proved to everyone and ourselves that we bounce back. I don't think we would have played as well as we did that weekend and the next against Lindenwood and Maryville without that first loss. I think that this was the perfect spring season to set up for season in the fall.

We know now that this group is capable of recognizing our weaknesses and making them better, which is the best quality of a great team. We are playing in a league this summer, keeping up on touches while working on our own and everyone is going to come back better and stronger in the fall. In addition to our team we have great freshmen coming in that I think can step up and be a huge part of our program. Also, we are all hoping that Tori and Molly come back strong for the fall because they will be a tremendous help to our team as well. Fall of 2012 is going to be our season.

"The Will Must Be Stronger Than The Skill"

“Champions aren't made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them-a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have last-minute stamina, they have to be a little faster, they have to have the skill and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill”. Muhammad Ali

This quote was given to us after our night practice on Tuesday by Molly Costello, a quote that everyone on the team can relate to. This quote could not be more perfect after a practice that all of us were already tired for beforehand and were exhausted when the practice finished. This quote struck me a lot because I have always lived by the motto of passion and heart will give you the win. There has been plenty of times last season that will came into play to win like playing Parkside and NKU in the tournament, but we all fell short in the conference championship. Our team is blessed with 25 talented players from all over the St. Louis and Quincy areas, but what make us unique and special is the heart that every player has when they show up to play.

Training indoors and playing futsol is a great example of the will and competitiveness we all have because we do everything possible to get a win or finish the cross-fit. Seeing the girls push themselves makes me want to do better more and I want to win for them. It was tough on everyone losing the championship game in PKS, but we came together as one and realized that we have another opportunity to get there, but first we have to come together in the off-season.

I am so excited for our team to start playing again because I know the chemistry we are forming now will be unstoppable by fall and no team is going to step in our way. We all have the talent, but great players have the will and we were all born to be great. Our team is reaching for the next level to be champions and to be a threat nationally. I cannot wait to experience this journey with all these girls.

2012: New Year, New Beginnings

We ended our 2011 season in the NCAA tournament and had to face the reality that we would be losing some AWESOME seniors. Now, as the new year has begun, we are building something special; it is the beginning of a new team. In the fall new players will come into the mix of our current players, all striving for one goal: a GLVC championship. In the words of sophomore Jodi Chapie, “I want that ring!”

Currently, the Lady Hawks have been hard at work. For the past couple of months we have all been training on our own, demonstrating a “Fit for Life” attitude so that when we started team training again that we would not miss a beat. We are now two training sessions in and things are looking fantastic. The hard work that this group puts in throughout each session is extraordinary. We are hungry for that championship title! Each player has their own unique strengths that we bring to the table, and when all of us use those together in one unit it truly is special.

Personally, I have my own new beginning. I am now considered an upperclassman. Wow! These last two seasons have gone by so fast. I remember coming in as a freshman in the fall of 2010, being so timid and hardly saying a word to anyone. Now, my teammates can’t get me to shut up! The experiences I have had so far here as a Lady Hawk will help me in my own leadership role as a big Junior. But, for now, I am going to work hard this off season and spring season, pushing myself and my teammates to get better each day. This is a special group, and if we better ourselves each day, that championship is ours.
